Actually... I got started carving pumpkins one year when I got a little too competitive for an office pumpkin carving contest one year. I researched and researched until I stumbled across this technique and then carved 3 pumpkins for the contest. I won first, second, and third place, plus best of show! My coworkers said they would never throw another contest, and I became hooked. That was about three years ago.

I didn't really have any other creative outlet at the time. Last year I wanted to try my hand at wood carving so I would have a "real" medium to show to people. Most people are amazed, but it still doesn't get much respect. As an example - I tried to teach a workshop and everyone tried enrolling their pre-schoolers. If they think these are so amazing, did they really think that their kids could do this technique???? It was really an insult that the class turned into a babysitting session. Hence my reason for looking into wood carving. When my woodcarving class didn't get enough people signed up to make, I stumbled into a pottery class. I got hooked on pottery and have never made it to wood. So now I also do pottery and glass work in addition to my crazy Octobers! [link]

That would be HELL of a LOT of time. I actually have about 20 hours in this pumpkin.

As far as photoshop..... Pumpkins are incredibly difficult to photograph. I sometimes use photo editing software just to brighten the picture... I don't do anything else in photoshop with the photograph though.
